“Please shut the cellar door on your way up.”

The air felt damp and heavy, either due to the nature of basement rooms or the tension. The cellar briefly became brighter and grew dark again as the door creaked shut. The only sound one could hear after the footsteps had receded was that of quiet breathing growing faster and shallower. An attempt to take a deep breath. Pacing. The cellar had somehow grown colder, perhaps because of the absence of human life caused by one interlocutor’s departure. The other stayed standing in the small, mostly empty room for a while. When they finally moved, it was to pick up a tall glass sitting on one of the barrels against the wall. The glass felt cool to the touch, full of dark liquid that disappeared within seconds. It was rather kind of the human to house a vampire in his cellar. It was quite peculiar that he would feed them occasionally. Either way, the vampire was outstaying their welcome, clearly, and needed to return to their home. Now, how would-

“I’m not leaving.”

The voice came from upstairs through the door. When no response came, the door swung open, flooding the cellar with light. The human sat down heavily on the top step. He waited, and waited, and waited. The vampire eventually came up the staircase and sat beside him. He was stubborn and refused to do much of what the vampire asked of him. The vampire was also quite hard-headed and snubbed his many attempts to help. The pair sat in silence for a while staring down at their shadows cast on the stairs by the light behind them. The vampire’s back straightened. The light behind them.

“I am sitting in the sunlight.”

“I told you it would be fine.”
